The Titleist Performance Institute Golf Rehab Intro

Working in private practice, I've come across many patients who injured themselves playing golf, or wanted to get back to playing golf as part of their goals. I tell them I golf myself and am certified through the Titleist Performance Institute(TPI) (Level 2 Medical). But I never usually have time during treatments to completely lay it all out on what it is I do with this TPI certification or how it can help them.

First off, it's not the only golf based rehab platform out there, but it is considered near the top of the list. However, this isn't some magic system that'll turn you into a Pro in days! It's an evaluative tool I use in conjunction with my skills as a PT to more effectively screen golfers. It was developed with golfers in mind, and I've used it with many of my past patients with success.

This evaluation and program can be simple or very advanced. Twenty two out of the top 30 pro golfers have “TPI teams” around them, but I'll tailor it to the 90 year old who just wants another day out on the course in the sun.

As I said I'm a golfer, a decent one and still learning, but am no means a pro. But I do know how the body moves, and how to fix it. The TPI evaluation lays out a formula for us to follow in looking for common swing characteristics which may be contributing, or putting you at risk for injury. Ever been told you “Hang Back” or “Sway/Slide” during your swing? What about “Losing your posture” or “Coming over the top” Yeah, those kind of swing faults.

In it's most limited form, it may find a swing fault that is taking strokes off your game, even if it isn't causing injury. How advanced we go after that completely depends on your goals as a golfer/athlete. If you're an avid golfer, think of it as your “annual check-up” before heading to the course to chase a low round. It can also be used to find data for your swing coaches, or personal trainers/golf fitness professionals.

You'll be put through a 16-point movement screen and we'll ask you questions about your game, how often you play, etc. With your permission, we'll take some video we can slow down and analyze and save for progression.

Once we find the issues leading to you seeking us out, we'll develop a plan to improve them. This can move down two tracks depending on what we find. If you're having pain or an obvious injury, we'll need to address that first with PT. But if you're just working on fitness goals, we'll move to the wellness portion of our show..

This is where it'll be important to know your goals and how often you work on your game. Do you have a coach and take lessons? Or do you grab as many beers as you can fit in your bag and play 9 in twilight after work? While both are my ideal client, they have different goals for themselves.

This is where Meadowlands PT and Wellness differs from some others out there. I won't try and sell you on something you don't want or need. We'll use specialized exercises based on your unique swing faults, weaknesses, motor control issues, and frankly, your goals as a golfer.

For the leisure golfer, this might be all you need or want. For the more advanced golfer, we'll provide a link between rehab/fitness/golf professional to more specifically mold your game into how you want to play.

We'll develop specific programs to target your issues and track your results as you improve so you can see it yourself. You'll get access to resources to follow along and will be monitored for as long as needed. Upon finishing, you'll be given resources to use to continue to maintain or build on your goals. Hope that gives some clarification or a starting point to what I can offer as a Golf Rehab Specialist.
